Our second day in Ottawa began  with a political morning as we set off along Sussex Avenue toward Parliament Hill. We toured the grounds before entering the West Block for a captivating , and very heated, Question Period! Looking up at the Peace Tower crowning the Center Block, we imagined a world with peace, tranquility and compassion. Walking the grounds, we noted the various statues depicting our influential leaders; such as our very first Prime Minister: John A. MacDonald, the Famous Five: who solidified the vote for women and their right to run for office, as well as our Sovereign Head of State (if only symbolically) Queen Elizabeth II! I feel it is important to note here: our Parliament remains on Unceded Territory, and some would say is still in dispute regarding the Rights and Freedoms of our Indigenous Brothers and Sisters. Afterward we boarded the coach and drove a quick 30 minutes to the small and charming town of Carp for a fast and delicious bite at Alice’s Cafe; a delightful lunch spot! Moving on, we arrived a the Diefenbunker, Canada’s Cold War Museum! What a wild place! Well worth a visit anytime! Underground, we traveled through the decontamination showers to even lower depths of 70 feet below! We explored the Medics Center, the Control Room (reserved for the 5 necessary decision making designated survivors), Women’s Quarters (extended to meet the needs of changing times in the 1970’s), and the Bank Vault (meant to hold the Gold Reserves of the Bank of Canada)! Following our lesson in Cold war Politics, we continued on to The Canadian War Museum for a moving, and instructive tour of our national and global history! A sad, beautiful, and emotional moment; the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, in particular, is always a stirring experience. This will be a lasting memory for the students, and for myself as well. Finally to round off the day; we had a Filling and Fantastic Fajita Frenzy at the Lonestar Texas Grill, before heading over to the Ottawa Table Tennis Club for rounds of fun and terrific tournaments! Great Job Alex on Winning 1st Place! Felicitations!
